FertilitySmarts explains Gestation Period

Conception occurs when an egg is fertilized by sperm. It is most often the case that a woman is unaware of the exact time that conception has occurred. As such, last menstrual period is generally used to determine an expected due date, or end of gestation.

While 40 weeks is considered a typical period of gestation, pregnancies raging from 37-42 weeks are generally considered normal. Statistically, only 4 out of every 100 women will deliver on their due date.
