What Does Childfree Mean?

Childfree is a term that refers to adults who do not have children, whether biological, adopted, or otherwise. This term is usually used to describe adults who have chosen not to have children but is also used to describe those who are unable to have children, such as people struggling with infertility or those who have resolved their infertility by deciding not to have children.

Childfree is also known as childfree by choice or childless by choice.

FertilitySmarts Explains Childfree

The term childfree is often used interchangeably with the term childless. However, it is important to note the distinction between the two terms.

Childfree adults have actively made a decision not to have children. Alternatively, childless adults are those that have decided to have children but have not yet been able to. This could be for many reasons, such as planning to have children in the future or struggling to conceive.

Before the term childfree was popularized, adults without children were referred to as childless. This was problematic because it implied that everyone who didn’t have children wanted them.
