Definition - What does Conception mean?

Conception occurs when a sperm cell penetrates and fertilizes an egg cell. With natural conception, this occurs when sperm travels through the vagina, into the uterus and fertilize an egg in the fallopian tubes.

With assisted conception, this might occur when sperm and eggs are mixed in a dish in a lab setting with the hopes of fertilization occurring or where a sperm is injected directly into the cytoplasm of an egg.

FertilitySmarts explains Conception

In order for natural conception to occur, many things need to happen. A healthy egg needs to be released, motile healthy sperm needs to travel up the fallopian tube, and the two cells must meet in a timely manner.

Some people need to seek assistance in trying to conceive and there are many treatments options available including in vitro fertilization, intrauterine insemination, donated sperm, eggs, and embryos and surrogacy.
