TPAL is an acronym for a system used to describe obstetrical history. It stands for term births, preterm births, abortions, and living children.

The TPAL system is used by medical professionals to simply describe a woman's obstetric history. It is used as follows:

T- Term births (after 37 weeks gestation)

P- Preterm births (before 37 weeks gestation)

A- Abortions (whether spontaneous or elective)

L- Living children

For example, a woman who has had 1 term infant, 2 preterm infants, 1 miscarriage, and has 3 living children would be described as TPAL 1-2-1-3.
