Definition - What does Mittelschmerz mean?
Mittelschmerz is a one-sided abdominal pain that some women experience during ovulation. This pain is considered to be a secondary fertility sign as it is an indication of when an egg is released and ready for fertilization.
Mittelschmerz is also know as ovulation pain, middle pain or midcycle pain.
FertilitySmarts explains Mittelschmerz
Mittelschmerz occurs roughly halfway through a woman's menstrual cycle, around day 14 in a typical cycle. It is caused by the changes in hormone levels as the body prepares for possible pregnancy. It can be felt on alternating sides that vary monthly depending on which ovary is releasing an egg.
Discomfort can range from mild soreness to rare cases of severe pain lasting hours, sometimes accompanied by nausea. It does not require any medical treatment. To manage the pain, over the counter pain medication is typically used.
