Definition - What does Dysmenorrhea mean?
Dysmenorrhea means having pain during menstruation. This term may be used to refer to menstrual cramps, or to other causes of painful menstruation that could indicate a medical problem with the potential to impact fertility.
FertilitySmarts explains Dysmenorrhea
Some women have pain with their periods as a result of the normal contractions their uterus performs during menstruation. These women usually have painful periods from the time they first start menstruating. New or severe dysmenorrhea can indicate a serious medical problem that can also cause infertility and increased risk of cancer without proper treatment. These conditions include endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, narrowing of the cervix, or tumors called fibroids growing in the uterus.
Treatments that may improve period pain that is not caused by an underlying problem include anti-inflammatory medications, supplements, or hormonal medication to improve symptoms.
