Pregnancy Test Tweaking

What Does Pregnancy Test Tweaking Mean?

Pregnancy test tweaking involves taking a picture of a pregnancy test and using a photo editing tool, such as Photoshop, to adjust the picture’s brightness and contrast to show the lines or lack thereof, more accurately. The trend of tweaking is meant to enhance the test’s lines to make it more visible to the naked eye.

It is believed by some that tweaking photos can help to obtain early pregnancy test results, in some cases, as early as a week to two weeks earlier than waiting for a missed period.

FertilitySmarts Explains Pregnancy Test Tweaking

Pregnancy test tweaking is usually done by people who are trying to conceive but are anxious about the results.

The photos are usually uploaded onto a forum, social media platform, or app, each of which has its own rules and recommendations for the tweaking process. Some of these sites claim that the filters used “pull the dye activated by pregnancy hormones.”

The practice is frowned upon by many members of the medical community because there have been many cases when it has given false hope. There have also been times when so-called tweakers —the people doing the tweaking—have altered the results of the tests, for personal gain. Things can also go wrong when trying to interpret the results due to visibility.

There could be several reasons why a second line could appear without pregnancy including, but not limited to:

  • The dye in the test can run
  • It could be an indent in the test
  • The editing of pixels can also create the illusion of an additional line

There is no scientific evidence to support pregnancy test tweaking and its potential psychological effects have also come into question. For the best results, you should buy an accurate pregnancy test and wait until the right amount of time has passed before taking the test.

For tests to correctly determine whether you are pregnant or not, it needs to pick up on a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and it can typically be detected 10 – 14 days after fertilization.
