This article covers what you need to know about using lubrication when trying to conceive (TTC).<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" id=\"lubricants-and-trying-to-conceive\">Lubricants and Trying to Conceive<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When it comes to baby-making, it&rsquo;s no surprise that timed intercourse can be stressful. In couples trying to conceive, vaginal dryness is found to occur at a rate as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S0015-0282(03)00127-4\">twice<\/a> as that of the general population. Sometimes getting your body to &ldquo;perform&rdquo; is too much pressure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For people with <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/humrep\/dew215\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">endometriosis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2014\/1001\/p465.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">dyspareunia<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/humrep\/dez046\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">infertility-related distress<\/a>, or those taking the fertility-enhancing drug <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rxlist.com\/clomid-side-effects-drug-center.htm\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Clomid<\/a>, lubrication during intercourse might be necessary.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>The bottom line<\/strong><strong>: if lubricant can make sex more comfortable for you, there is no good reason to go without it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/cdn.commoninja.com\/sdk\/latest\/commonninja.js\" defer=\"\"><\/script> <\/p>\n<div class=\"commonninja_component\" comp-id=\"f0b43de6-00f4-4d0b-87a7-4c502546a16b\" comp-type=\"comparison_table\"><\/div>\n<hr>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" id=\"can-lubricant-affect-fertility\">Can lubricant affect fertility?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For pregnancy to occur, sperm needs to propel themselves through the cervix to meet an egg. Sperm motility, or its ability to move straight ahead quickly, is required for this to happen.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Some over-the-counter lubricants such as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/humrep\/13.12.3351\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">KY Jelly<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9886513\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Replens<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17509584\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Astroglide<\/a> have been found to impair how <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24390681\/#&#038;gid=article-figures&#038;pid=fig-2-uid-1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sperm move<\/a> or even are <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0209950\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">toxic to sperm<\/a> in lab testing. If sperm have impaired movement (or are dead), they likely aren&#39;t contributing to a pregnancy; but there&#39;s more to the story.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" id=\"do-you-need-a-sperm-friendly-lube\">Do you need a &quot;sperm-friendly&quot; lube?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">While standard lubricants have been shown to slow or even kill sperm in a lab setting, studies in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1097\/aog.0b013e31825b87ae\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2012<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/1471-0528.15218\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2018<\/a> found that lubricant use didn&#39;t seem to reduce the chance of conceiving. These results may be because sperm are exposed to lubrication in the lab for longer durations than is likely to occur in real life.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Both studies have limitations (for example, the 2012 study groups fertility-friendly lube and regular lubes in the same category). Both also say that more research is needed to confirm the finding, so It&#39;s possible that &ldquo;lube didn&rsquo;t make a difference&rdquo; might not be the full picture.<\/p>\n<p>So is sperm-friendly lube a must when trying to conceive? Without a diagnosis of male-factor infertility, the data doesn&rsquo;t suggest that it is critical, but it also lacks consensus. (We found doctors recommending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babycenter.com\/getting-pregnant\/how-to-get-pregnant\/does-using-a-lubricant-inhibit-conception_7098\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">no lube<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebump.com\/a\/fertility-friendly-lubes-helpful-or-hype-\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">any lube<\/a>, and only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netdoctor.co.uk\/parenting\/conception\/a25946119\/fertility-lubricant\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sperm-friendly lube<\/a>.) What we do know is that there are lubrications that don&#39;t harm sperm in a lab setting.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" id=\"what-does-fertility-lubricant-do\">What does fertility lubricant do?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Fertility-friendly lubrication is a particular category of lubricants (called PEB lubricants) required by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/scripts\/cdrh\/cfdocs\/cfPCD\/classification.cfm?ID=PEB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">FDA to undergo testing<\/a> to prove they won&#39;t impact fertilization or harm eggs, sperm, or embryos. Essentially, a fertility-friendly lube has proven not to harm conception.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" id=\"does-fertility-lubricant-help-you-get-pregnant\">Does fertility lubricant help you get pregnant?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">No, not really. Theoretically, a sperm-friendly lubricant works by not make it <em>more challenging<\/em> to get pregnant because it doesn&rsquo;t damage sperm. Fertile-quality <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/humrep\/deh173\">cervical mucus<\/a> that has an egg-while-like consistency is the real pregnancy helper.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" id=\"does-using-lube-prevent-pregnancy\">Does using lube prevent pregnancy?<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">No! Commercial lube isn&#39;t birth control! It can&#39;t prevent pregnancy. See more on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/birth-control\/spermicide\">spermicides<\/a> and contraceptive gels.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\" id=\"what-you-should-know-about-lube\">What You Should Know About Lube<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The chemical ingredients in lube are called excipients. The combination of these excipients creates a lube&#39;s sensations&mdash;slippery, tingly, moist, etc. These desired characteristics can come at the cost of a chemical makeup that can damage tissue and cells. There are two measurements to know with water-based lubricants (which all fertility-friendly lubes are): pH and osmolality.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Lube pH<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">pH is a measurement of a solution&#39;s acidity or alkalinity on a scale from 0 to 14. Less than 7.0 is acidic, or greater than 7.0 is alkaline. In the middle, 7.0 is neutral, just like water.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The pH of the healthy vagina is moderately acidic, with a range of <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/10665\/76580\/1\/WHO_RHR_12.33_eng.pdf\">pH 3.8&ndash;4.5<\/a> to help protect against bacterial growth. Acidity, however, can also kill alkaline-loving sperm that prefers the <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0132974\">7.2&#8211;8.2 pH<\/a> of optimal semen. This acidity is why fertile cervical mucus is essential to natural conception. It is more alkaline with a pH of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8458467\/\">around 7.0<\/a>, helping to provide sperm safe passage. We know that pH matters because sperm can<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1179%2F002436312804827127\"> live up to 5 days<\/a> in fertile mucus and die within hours in more acidic non-fertile mucus.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>So what does this mean for fertility lubes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">A fertility lube&#39;s pH should not seriously alter vaginal pH or be toxic to sperm (so you don&#39;t want a low pH). There is no specific pH that the FDA requires a fertility lubricant to be, but any PEB-certified lubricant has a pH that has been proven not to harm sperm, eggs, or embryos. Many fertility-friendly lubes are neutral pH of around 7.0 to match optimal semen and fertile fluids.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Lube Osmolality<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Think of osmolality as the ability to pull water from tissue and cells. A lubricant with high osmolality can draw moisture out of cells which can dehydrate and irritate vaginal tissue and harm sperm. The ideal state is isosmotic\/isotonic, meaning the lube and the cells have the same hydration levels, and no water is exchanged.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what does this mean for fertility lubes?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Commercial lubricants often have high osmolalities (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/76580\/WHO_RHR_12.33_eng.pdf;jsessionid=746C5A42A7359B026531D1A73500647C?sequence=1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2000-6000 mOsm\/kg<\/a>). The World Health Organization (WHO) <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/76580\/WHO_RHR_12.33_eng.pdf;jsessionid=746C5A42A7359B026531D1A73500647C?sequence=1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">recommends<\/a> that lubrication not exceed <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/76580\/WHO_RHR_12.33_eng.pdf;jsessionid=746C5A42A7359B026531D1A73500647C?sequence=1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">300 mOsm\/kg<\/a> but set <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/76580\/WHO_RHR_12.33_eng.pdf;jsessionid=746C5A42A7359B026531D1A73500647C?sequence=1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">1200 mOsm\/kg<\/a> as an upper limit because of the lack of lower osmolality products.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For a fertility-friendly lube, isotonicity requires a product to have a comparable concentration of the water molecules to vaginal secretions (<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/76580\/WHO_RHR_12.33_eng.pdf;jsessionid=746C5A42A7359B026531D1A73500647C?sequence=1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">260-290 mOsm\/kg<\/a> ), semen (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/humrep\/deg204\">289 to 351 mOsm\/kg<\/a> ), or fertile cervical mucus (<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0209950\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">250 to 422 mOsm\/kg<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">There is no specified osmolality for a PEB lubricant to meet, but a PEB-certified lubricant is considered to be within a safe range. Based on the products available, the acceptable range is likely around 260 mOsm\/kg to 400 mOsm\/kg.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Glycerine<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Glycerine (glycol) is an ingredient used to attract and retain moisture found in some fertility lubes. Glycerine has a bad name in lubes because higher levels can significantly <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/76580\/WHO_RHR_12.33_eng.pdf;jsessionid=746C5A42A7359B026531D1A73500647C?sequence=1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">increase osmolality<\/a>, which can dehydrate tissue and cause <a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/ddfe\/9820b17e61b0e6685a13c28f1f5647329cd5.pdf\">inflammation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With PEB fertility lubes, osmolality cannot be high (max of 400 mOsm\/kg compared to the 2000-6000 mOsm\/kg of some lubes). While only low levels can be found in fertility lubes, some people still choose to avoid the ingredient.<\/p>\n<h3>Parabens<\/h3>\n<p>Parabens include methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben. Parabens are used as preservatives and are thought to weakly <a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.3390%2Fijms18092007\">mimic estrogen<\/a> and be potential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4819835\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">endocrine disruptors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The long-term health risks of parabens<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/biomonitoring\/Parabens_FactSheet.html\"> aren&rsquo;t completely<\/a> known. Research has suggested that concentrations found in commercial lubricants can <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1111\/andr.12499\">damage sperm<\/a> in a clinical setting. Another study suggests that &ldquo;chronic exposure&rdquo; to propylparaben &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3855500\/\">may contribute<\/a>&rdquo; to reduced fertility, but additional studies are required.<\/p>\n<p>According to the FDA, the investigation is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/cosmetics\/cosmetic-ingredients\/parabens-cosmetics\">ongoing<\/a> as to the safety. Because of the uncertainty, some people prefer to avoid parabens altogether.<\/p>\n<h3>Magnesium and Calcium Ions<\/h3>\n<p>Some fertility lubes contain magnesium and calcium ions. Magnesium and calcium are involved in sperm transport, and calcium plays a critical role in the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/jcs.biologists.org\/content\/129\/9\/1940\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">fertilization<\/a>. The inclusion of these ions is thought to help mimic natural fluids, which may increase the possibility of fertilization&mdash;but we can&#39;t find any research indicating that you will get pregnant faster.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"list-of-fertility-friendly-lubes\">List of Fertility-Friendly Lubes<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">How do you know which lubricants are fertility-friendly?
